The artwork for ‘Two Apples, One Lemon and Four Flowers’,
1997, published in The Independent newspaper on 7 January
1997. This colour offset lithograph was presented as a gift
print in the centre of the newspaper.
Hockney called this work ‘NewsPrint’, as it was conceived
to be produced as an original print by a newspaper. The
Independent explained: “Hockney has provided us with
four separate pieces of work, all in black and white. Each
corresponds to one of the four colours of the printing
process: cyan, magenta, black and yellow. The print itself
only exists once it is rolled off the presses”. The artist further
explained, “although it is printed mechanically on a page of a
newspaper, it is constructed only to exist in that way”.
