After Clive Davis, founder and president of Arista Records, met Warhol in 1985 at a party hos-
ted by investor Steven Greenberg, Warhol received the commission to paint a portrait of Aretha Franklin for
the cover of her album Aretha, released on Arista in 1986.
This poster was intended for promoting the new album in record stores. It reproduces one of two portraits of
Franklin painted by Warhol in 1985. The poster displays Warhol’s printed signature, considerably enlarged
to match the poster’s width and is positioned in the space added above Franklin’s head to make the compo-
sition rectangular in format. Warhol’s signature is placed vertically along the poster’s lower-right margin; a
line of text in his handwriting appears in the bottom margin, indicating that the album was also available on
cassette and compact disc.
