Vollard had asked Chagall for a book on the circus, or which only 19 prints were made, both were already thinking about another project: the illustration of the Bible. The Circus project was therefore abandoned. Chagall had already proposed the idea thirty years before, perhaps this is the secret of these magnificent plates, which seem to come out from his brush with no apparent effort as they had already been in his mind for many years.
